Today, this is one of the largest federal agencies in the country. In 1972, the Veterans Administration employed 172,000 full-time employees.

In Montana, there are two Veterans Administration hospitals. One is located in Helena which is also the location of the regional office, and the other is located in Miles City. The total number of persons treated in each hospital was 1,761 in Miles City and 2,649 in Helena.
There are two types of income support programs for veterans. Compensation provides income to veterans who suffered service-connected disabilities, and to survivors of veterans who die during military service. Pensions are given to those in "need", mainly the aged.
