This is a species which characteristically breeds only in clear, sh...allow pools. Breeding can occur in artificial cattle ponds, flooded shallow fields, shallow ditches or any temporary rain-formed pool on the short grass prairie. The Great Plains toad has been found to be quite restricted in its selection of breeding places. Eggs are deposited in two continuous strings wound around plants on the bottom of the pool. A female may produce about 20,000 eggs. Habitat: The Great Plains toad in Montana seems to prefer the higher portions of the short grass prairie. It is found in agricultural lands, along irrigation ditches, and in the floodplains of streams and rivers.
