He slipped out of Rachel’s bed, taking care not to wake her. If he did, she would ask him what was wrong. He would explain, and soon her gentle touch would steal him from this sorrow.

Seeing the glint of another bottle behind it, he picked up that one and twisted off the top. He poured a large glassful. He downed it. Whiskey! Refilling it, he took it and the bottle to a chair with a view of the river.
“Wyatt?” Astonishment was in Rachel’s soft voice.
He smiled as he drank in the sight of her as avidly as he had the whiskey.
