Men are apt to forget that the reason why the operations, which are so utterly hateful to the child, become in time so interesting and en- srao-ins: to themselves, is, not that the child is less capable of intellectual enjoyment, less capable of being incited to labour by other influences than those of mere physical pleasure or pain ; but that the fact is, as... most children are taught, they cannot enjoy the slightest intellectual plea- sure of any kind.
