Then I walked up and looked at my father. He was nice. Everybody liked him. His face was peaceful but awfully white. But it wasn't my father. There was some- thing different. I noticed it right away. It seemed important to me and I felt awful. He hadn't tied that necktie! It wasn't just so. It was clumsy crude. It made me sick at heart. I stood there looking at him. I wanted to wake him and tell him about life about the wonderful smell and feel of things about laughter and friends and music and... sunshine. I wanted to tell him about the friends we could have been if it hadn't been for that goddam line of ready-to-wear. I just stood there looking at him. I wanted to put my arms around him and cry, and I didn't know why. We'd been so far apart he'd been so busy he'd been so determined to get some- where and so afraid I would never get anywhere. And he was such a nice little guy. I put my hand on the coffin and said, "Goodbye, Dad, " as nicely as I could and with all the love and friendship I had.
