The grasp of the axe gives a feeling of security, even where the stick is of no help. It is by no means easy to stand well in steps on a steep place without an axe or stick in the hands. In such places the moral influence of the rope is very great indeed, but the actual security it affords is comparatively slight. Still, the rule must be remembered in all such places, that if a given passage is too bad to be crossed when a party is roped, lest the slip of one should drag down all, then it is to...o dangerous to be crossed at all. On many mountains in the Alps various routes have been devised which enable the mountaineer to enjoy the pleasures of ridge-climbing for the greater part of his ascent.
