To take the first point Greek art, philosophy, science and literature were flourishing long before Pericles and in many cities besides Athens ; philosophy and science in the sixth and most of the fifth centuries were almost confined to Greek Asia Minor and Greek Italy ; painting and sculpture were as prominent in the Peloponnese, poetry in Boeotia and the islands of the Aegean, as in Athens.
