To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Mumford, who had been in business in Nantes, and subsequently in Hayti, was overwhelmed by the insurreftion in the latter place and barely escaped with his wife and children on board an American vessel in the har- bour, leaving behind him to destruction everything he owned in the world. Immediately on arriving in New York, he was met by Mr. Mumford, who took him with his family to a house that he had provided for them, and continued to serve him in many kindly ways until his fortunes were reest...ablished. [ ^-H ] We get a side light on Gurdon Mumt'ord about 1807, from the charming journal of Jonathan Mason of Boston. That gentleman was taking a journey in his own carriage, accom- panied by two of his daughters, from Boston to South Caro- lina. His comments on all that he saw and heard by the way are truly entertaining, but do not especially concern us here. He thought rather poorly of all things beyond the borders of Suffolk County and Massachusetts Bay, but seems to have had much respeft and regard for Gurdon Mumford.
