When later on the law in New Ycr...k required a lowering of the rates, the company refused to comply and forced the consumers to continue to pay the rates charged or else go without gas. The courts were then invoked by the city, and pending the legal contro- versy which the company continued for many years hoping to finally tire out the people, the case was carried to the United States Supreme Court which decided in favor of the city and ordered the company to refund to the consumers the amount illegally extorted from them totalling about $12, 000, 000.
