We never seemed to have much money, and knowing that most everyone I was in school with considered me trash didn’t help matters much. My clothes were always ill-fitting and from Sears, and I knew the kids whose parents belonged to the country club and bought their clothes at big fancy stores in Houston laughed at me, mostly behind my back but sometimes right to my face.
