Sir,— The instruAive notes in the November number of the Museums Journal^ by Dr. Bather, on '* The Labels in Public Galleries," should be very welcome to museum curators, and most of the latter will probably sympathise with his views. But, as he aptly remarks, difficulties will arise when one attempts to carry out the idea of using English names on museum labels.
One of my predecessors also had conceived the idea of translating all the Latin... names into English, with dire results ; but although most of these have now been deletetl. all good English names have been retained as far as possible. The difficulties we are confronted with are perhaps more apparent in the fishes than in any other group, as the same species frequently has a different name on various parts of the coast. How are we to decide which of the many English names is the corred one?
