The utmost I had ever hoped for was that, when my rank made me no longer eUgible for the com- mand of a regiment, my having served for so long in a force not under the inmiediate orders of the Head of the Army would not be a hindrance to my being selected, in my turn, for one of the higher appoint- ments in the rift of the commander-in-chief- And here was I, without solicitation on my part, appointed almost on the instant to the conmiand of a brigade proceeding on service I I was indeed highly favoured, and was forthwith the object of wamn congratulations from many friendly quarters.
