So active a part did she take in arousing the enthusiasm and the patriotism of the soldiers and the people that she provoked the resentment of Napoleon, wh...o referred to her in his dispatches in language that must be described as brutal as well as unchivalrous. A thousand sabres were bared vowing vengeance against her accuser.
The young officers who had not yet received their baptism of fire clamored for war. These hot heads inso- lently sharpened their swords on the stone steps of the French ambassador's residence in Berlin and dared him to send word of it to his master.
