The Russian general the Wings attacked on the 18th, driving the French into the town, and as Steinheil was advancing along the left bank of the Dwina from Disna, St Cyr evacuated Polotzk and withdrew across the Dwina, at the same time defeating SteinheiPs advanced guard, and forcing that general to retreat to Disna. Wittgenstein then crossed the Dwina, and St Cyr... retired on Chashniki, on the River Ula, where Victor effected a junction with him on the 29th October. Thus Smolensk, where Victor was to have formed a general reserve, and from whence he was to have advanced to meet the Grand Army or to support St Cyr or Schwarzenberg as occasion arose, was left with only a garrison. In the meantime, in the south-western theatre of opera- tions Schwarzenberg had retreated before Chichagov's advance, and crossed the Bug at Drogichin, thus exposing THE RETREAT TO SMOLENSK 181 the French line of retreat towards the Berezina.
