Or this may have been the result of pressure from the Gonds or other western races. At any rate, when they first came under observation they were established in Hazaribagh, one of the districts of Chota Nagpur lying south of the cities of Patna and Gaya. Early in the nineteenth century this eastward movement continued, and they appeared in the neighbourhood of the Daman-i-Koh in 1832.
It offered them the asylum which they needed, and F 82 NATIVES OF NORTHERN INDIA from the Paharias, to whom the reversion of this district should naturally have fallen, they had no reason to expect opposition.
The Santals were distinguished from the other kindred Dravidian tribes by their strong national feel- ing and by their determination to preserve themselves from contamination by foreign races.
