As Rowland had promised, the house resisted the wind too, assisted by its curvature, which seemed able to deflect the airflow smoothly in spite of all its protuberances. It did not shake at all, nor did it produce the kinds of noises that English houses invariably did in English storms. It did not creak or groan, and the shutters on its windows did not rattle or bang. It was, in fact, eerily silent within the house, whose insulating walls and windows muffled the sounds generated outside: the splashing of the water, the whistling of the wind and the intermittent rumbling of thunder.
