Rye, both winter and spring, is grown on the western uplands. Winter rye is one of the best grain crops for the valleys of the sand hills, although corn is grown quite generally. Wheat and potatoes are the most important cash crops of the region. The latter crop is considered elsewhere in this booklet. Some spring wheat is grown in northwestern 24 U. S. Emmer, commonly called speltz, grain sorghums, and millets are of minor importance. Grain sorghums are used to some extent in the southwestern part of the State.
