He then labored as assistant pastor of the First Presljyterian Church of Towanda, Pa. , from March, 1864, to May 10, 1865, when he was duly installed as pastor, having been ordained an evangelist by the ...Presbytery of Susquehanna, Sept. 6, 1864. His ministry of six years in this field was marked by the confidence and affection of his people. From this relation he was released Jan. 25, 1870, to accept the office of Treasurer of the Col- lege of New Jersey.
In accepting this important trust, he did not in any de- gree secularize himself, but on the contrary, in man}' spheres made himself effective as a minister of the gospel.
