On October 10, Sheridan resumed his retrograde movement and took up strong position on the north side of Cedar Creek, 39 PHILIP HENRY SHERIDAN.

Learning, however, that Early had arrived at Fisher's Hill with all his forces, Sheridan- ordered the return of the 6th Corps to Cedar Creek, where it arrived on the 14th. On the evening of the 15th, in answer to a summons from the

Sheridan started to Washington by the way of Front Royal, taking with him the whole of Torbert's cavalry, which he in- tended, after passing Front Royal, to dispatch to Charlottesville for the purpose of destroying the railroad communications of the enemy, while he with an escort should proceed to Washington.
On the 1 6th he was arrested en route to Washington by a dispatch from General Wright covering a dispatch purporting to come from General Longstreet to General Early, which gave him much perplexity, indicating that Longstreet was advancing with a large force which he intended to unite with Early, and fill suddenly upon Sheridan to surprise and crush him.
