Some steps have been taken to improve the area but much remains to be done. The City has identified Cleary Square as an area for concentrated improvements under the Community Development Block Grant Program, its capital budget and the Hyde Park Boston Plan. The inclusion of Cleary Square in Boston's Neighborhood Strategy Are* application for Section 8 subsidized housing complements this effort.
The need for additional elderly housing units in Hyde Park has been documented in a report prepared b...y the Boston Housing Authority and the Boston Redevelopment Authority in 1974 and is further substantiated by an examination of the current BHA waiting lists for elderly apartments in Hyde Park. To date, the only elderly housing in Hyde Park is a 48-unit development on the Mattapan border. A 104-unit development is currently planned for construction in late summer of 1978, on Summer Street, just west of Cleary Square.
This project will by no means satiate the existing demand for elderly housing in a community where 28% of the homeowners in 1970 were over 65 years of age.
