P. Willard & Co. , Chicago, 111.
The Simplex Naphtha engine differs from most other vapor engines in not depending upon atmospheric evapora- tion for its supply of gas. Attached to the engine is a generator, which is heated by the exhaust pipe from the cylinder, thus producing a uniform gas independent of at- mospheric temperature or humidity.
In starting the engine no fire is used to heat the genera- tor, it being provided with an improved vaporizing arrange- ment, which furnishes the engine w
...ith the vapor necessary for starting up. After running a few minutes, the genera- tor is sufficiently heated to produce a generated gas to take the place of the vaporized gas.
New Catechism of the Steam Engine, THE SIMPLEX NAPHTHA ENGINE.
In the Simplex engine the gases are admitted to the cylinder through an ordinary throttle valve, and by means of this the speed can be varied at will.
Fig. 220. THE SIMPWSX NAPHTHA ENGINE.
When running at a low speed, it is of course necessary to fire a smaller charge of gas under lower compression than when running at maximum speed.
