New England's answer was a general refusal to use these articles, and failure to convidt colonists accused of adts of violence against the revenue officers.
In these adts of resistance they ...were upholding the Englishman's ancient right to a voice in all matters of taxation. The denial of this right stood as the principal and diredt cause of the Revolution^ — ^ taxation without representation.
The violent opposition to these adls left the British government two alternatives — treating with the Americans as a virtually independent people, or compelling obedience by military force. A halfway method was sought. 1111770 all duties were repealed, except that of threepence a pound on tea.
