William Ellery, and is still occupied by his descendants. Hon. Wm. Ellery was born at Newport, Dec. 22d, 1727. He graduated at Harvard, and entered life as a merchant In this pursuit he was successful, and at one time he was Naval Officer for the port. In 1770 Mr. Ellery began the practice of the law, and he was soon in the enjoyment of a lucrative business. In 1776, with Stephen Hopkins, he was elected a delegate to the memorable Congress, and was one of the signers of the Declaration of Indep...endence. Du- ring his public life he was constantly employed on some of the most responsible duties, and at a time when his services were most needed, he was a con- spicuous member of the Marine Committee. He left Congress in 1785, and in 1790 he was appointed Collector of the Customs at Newport. Mr. Ellery contributed largely to the journals of NEWPORT ILLUSTRATED. 105 his day, in behalf of order, public faith and efficient government. He studied the Bible diligently and reverently, and acquainted himself with the opinions and reasons of hostile theologians.
