The tragedy is written in buskined alexandrines, a metre entirely foreign to the genius of German prosody.^ All the faults of the French tragedy recur in this "detestable" imitation. The impressive story of Massinger's Fatal ^ Karl Siegmund von Seckendorff (1744 — 1785) became, after a successful military career (first in the Austrian service and afterwards in the Army of the King of Sardinia), Lord-in-Waiting in the ducal house- hold at Weimar, where he joined that elite of men of letters of which Goethe was the acknowledged leader.
