Hauntingly alien, the sound rode the clear, chilled twilight air from the top of a mosque’s minaret into the winter darkness of morning’s earliest moments and urged her to rise. While most of her colleagues, especially those not on the early shift, were irritated by morning prayers, breaking into their sleep with a mesmeric howl in a language they didn’t understand, Claire found the recitations comforting and a perfectly reliable wake-up alarm.
