After "soupe," which means dinner, we received an unexpected visit from our chief, accompanied by the head of the Red Cross and some staff officers. They have been making a tour of the sections bringing official word that what we had read in the papers was true; the govern- ment has decided to take over the serv- ice; our chief and his associates have re- signed. For me this means the end very shortly for I shall do as they have seen fit to do. To the silent little group that gathered about him in the growing dark- ness he said a few words, words that come straight from a man's heart and go to others, and then he was gone, this fellow we all love, who will no longer be our chief.
