What reading level is North And South Or Four Questions Considered What Have We Done What Have We book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

14 With regard to the cause of this gigantic rebellion, I have before said, that its immediate cause was the election of Mr. Lincoln to the presidency. The whole spirit and policy of the South, in entering on the late presidential election, meant this, — "If we can succeed in electing our candidate, as we have in fifteen that have preceded it, well and good ; but if we fail, we intend to prostrate the government and break up the Union ; peaceably if we can, otherwise at the point of the sword.
..."* They failed, and immediately they set themselves to carry out their predetermined purpose. They rushed like madmen for the destruction of the Union, just because they were defeated in the election and were made to feel that the power of the government, which they had wielded for so long a period, essentially for sixty years, had passed out of their •hands, not probably to return again. This was more than southern chivalry could bear. So the appeal was made to arms, and we have been constrained to meet them on that ground.
