To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
For instance, Gr. "Ye shall know the indignation of mine anger. " for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years ; and ye shall know my breach •■ of promise : r Jer. 18. 9, 10. Lam. 3. Chald. "Ye shall know that ye have murmured against me. " Vulg. "Ye shall know my revenge. " In the vari- ous English versions we have the fol- lowing:— Cbz;. , "That ye may know what it is, when I withdraw my hand. " Mat. , " Ye shall feel my vengeance. " Cran. , " Ye shall know my displeas- ure. " ...Purv. , "Ye shall know a rup- ture with me. " Ainsworth renders it as in our version, but italicizes and parenthesizes the words " of prom- ise : " — " Ye shall know my breach (of promise). " As there is nothing to an- swer to these words in the original, it is not easy to perceive the grounds on which our translators have inserted them without the usual indications con- veyed by italic letters. They doubtless supposed that the "breach" implied a " breach of promise, " but this cannot be shown to be the legitimate purport of the term, although if it were, the ex- pression is still susceptible of a sense consistent with the general tenor of Scripture, and one that leaves the Di- vine perfections unimpeached.
