There is much complaint made by the admirers of arts and litera- ture, that their professors are not sufficiently advanced and honored by the State and by mankind. In my estimation they are honored more than is good either for themselves or for their calling. Good for mankind it may be to admire whatever is admirable i^ 'genius or art; but as to the poet himself, a very moderate extent of favorable acceptance in his own times is all that can be beneficial to him either as a man or as an artist.... He is by temperament but too excitable ; with him the vita umbraiilis is essential to repose and self-possession ; and it is from repose and self-possession, — ' Deep self-possession, an intense repose — ' * that all genuine emanations of poetic genius proceed.
To the poet, solitude itself is an excitement, intp which none that is adventitious shpuld intrude : the voices which come to him in solitude should not be.
