To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Gas as an ordinary ilium inant in private houses is an objectionable method of lighting. The fittings as a rule are unsightly, and the furnes are unpleasant to the senses, and corrosive of leather and metal-work. When a room is lighted by gas the currents of air arrange themselves in a rather curious fashion (vide dia- gram, Fig. 11), there being three strata of air of different temperatures. The gas-burners keep up a small local circulation of heated air at the upper part of the room, as shown... in the diagram. This does not, as a rule, extend much below the level of the burners, which are generally placed above the level of the head. Next there is a temperate zone in the centre, and a cold zone The Ventilation of Bouses. 75 for about a foot above the floor. At the same time the upper and middle zones are always mixing by a rocess of diffusion. This explains how intolerable the atmo- sphere is in low rooms lighted by gas ; the gas-burners being necessarily placed lower than usual, the heads of the occupants come within the hot zone near the ceiling.
