To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
It is but a number of regularities put together m a diforderly manner, and equally diftant from the beautiful both of art and of nature. The true beauty of an outline confifls more in breaks than in fweeps ; rather in an- gles than in rounds ; in variety, not in fuc- ceflion. The outline of a wood is a continued line, and fmall variations do not fave it from the in- fipidity of famenefs : one deep recefs, one bold prominence, has more elfeft than twenty little irregularities. That one divides t...he line into parts, but no breach is thereby made in its unity ; a continuation of wood always remains ; the form of it only is altered, and the extent is encreafed. The eye, which hurries to thp ex- tremity of whatever is uniform, delights to trace a varied line through all its intricacies, to paufe from [ 43 ] from ftage to ftage, and to lengthen the pro- grcfs. The parts muft not, however, on that account be multiplied, till they are too minute to be interefting, and fo numerous as to create confufion.
