Fauchet, a former French minister, by a British ship of war in the waters of the United States ; and which, she says, we have suffered to pass with impunity.
The outrage offered to Mr. Fauchet, was an attempt to seize his person and papers, on board of a vessel in which he had taken his passage from New York to Rhode-Island. The attempt was made by a British ship of war, lying near Newport in Rhode-Island. The vessel was stopped, and the trunks of Mr. Fauchet's attendants were searched ; he and
... his papers escaped ; because, having been informed of the design, he went ashore, and proceeded to Newport by land : Perceiving that they had missed their prey, the British party re- leased the vessel and those on boards When the President heard of this daring insult to our country, he felt and expressed a proper indig- nation ; but as he received the information from one party only, prudence no less than justice, required that before he acted, he should hear the other side. He ac- cordingly directed enquiries to be made ; having fully ascertained the facts, he ordered the British man of war to depart immediately from our harbours, and directed that in case of her disobedience for more than forty-eight hours, all intercourse between her and the country would be cut off.
