Such bul- letins, and addresses to his soldiers, as General Wil- lisen, in imitation of Napoleon, issued on all occa- sions, in a bombastic style, like that of the heroes of Ossian, or of the farce of Tom Thumb the Great, and which raised the German to a temporary enthusiasm bordering on insanity, would have been received with a smile of contempt by the cold, sedate Dane, who has no tendency in his character to such ecstacies or such reactions. A resolute, steady,... dauntless cha- racter, the same in defeat as in success, distinguishes, this writer observes, the Danish soldier ; and, like all sedate characters, he is very formidable when roused, and very enduring in action. The vapouring rhapsodies of General Willisen, and the short plain THE BATTLE OF IDSTBDT. 261 reports of General Krogh, he considers very illustra- tive of the armies they commanded.
