Our Lord might be conceived as saying no more than this, that the hour of temptation was at hand, and it was high time to pray for deliverance from it. Such are the words with which our Lord concludes the parable of the ten Virgins. And again He says ...to his disciples, three days before his crucifixion, speaking of the destruction of Jerusalem, which was a type of the final destruction of the world : ' Take ye heed, watch and pray : for ye know not when the time is. ' And again : * What I say unto you, I say unto all. Watch. ' So St Paul in general terms exhorts the Colossians to continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving: while to Timothy he says, 'Watch thou in all things. ' # Watchfulness, then, is a great Christian duty. How should it be otherwise?
