He’d downed a whisky and soda that was obviously not his first of the afternoon in record time and was working his way through another. Jack couldn’t help wondering what Mrs Dunbar, who was attending a matinée with Mr Bryce, would say when she got home. He hoped, because it had been a very long day, he wouldn’t be around to hear it.

Tommy Paxton, who works at the Shanghai and Oriental, says they’ve been round again. If they ask him, I know he’ll tell them what I did.
