No English lady had ever been inthe village before, so that there was considerable excitement producedby the visit. Mr Hodson says, "As we drew near to the gate of thevillage we saw two or three boys running to let their parents and othersknow that the Missionary and his wife were coming. On entering, Danielshowed us his house, and in a very short time nearly all the people ofthe village, men, women, and children, were gathered together. " Havingsuch a large congregation, Mr Hodson preached a s...hort sermon, but withvery little good effect, especially on the minds of the women, for theirattention was evidently much more occupied with the shape, colour andmaterial of Mrs Hodson's dress than with anything her husband said tothem. CHAPTER FOURTEEN. VILLAGE WASHERMAN. Daniel was by this time regularly installed as Mission Washerman. Thereis no such person as a _washerwoman_ amongst the Hindoos. Men do thewashing in India, and their manner of doing it is very different fromthe English mode. Instead of using wash-tubs, etcetera, etcetera, as anEnglish washerwoman does, the Indian washerman loads a donkey or twowith the dirty clothes, takes them to a tank of good clean water, andthere, in the open air, he performs all his purifying operations.
