This may or may not be an exaggeration. The skill of these ship-carpenters was something for us to marvel at. With a few crude tools — a broad axe, an adz, a chisel, a saw, and a ham- mer — they could fashion rough pieces of timber into a fleet sailing vessel. Many of the vessels in the whaling fleet were merchant ships rebuilt and altered into whalers; but as the years went by, agents realized the wisdom of purchasing sturdy vessels built specifically for whaling by men experienced and skilled m the craft.
