The bill's premise is that no hot water development should be allowed adjacent to the Park if it might pose a risk to Yellowstone's features.
By regulating activity adjacent to the Park, the bill addresses a fundamental problem. The Park is simply not big enough to ensure complete protection of the springs and aquifers tha...t recharge Old Faithful, Norris Geyser Basin, Mammoth Hot Springs and the other 10, 000 thermal areas in Yellowstone.
There is real need for this bill. There are already two hot water wells drilled adjacent to Yellowstone. Without the protections this measure contains, we may well be putting Yellowstone's magnificent features in jeopardy.
One by one, the world's geyser systems have tampered with — and ruined. Now we are down to two that are still basically untouched: Yellowstone's and one on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
