The building was so little damaged by the fire that it was finished one week after the fire and occupied at once by leading architects and business men. It was four stories high above a high basement, and after the fire it bore an inscription on both faces of the stone pier at the corner, reading as follows: "This fireproof building is the only one in the city that successfully stood the test of the Great Fire of October 9, 1871.
