By day a prominent feature of the landscape is formed by the smoke-pillars from the tall East Cambridge factory-chimneys, - the giant-twisted smoke-columns of jet or snow, pinnacled in the azure sky, silent, sinuous, stately, the grace of motion and contour in perfect and harmonious expression. In win ter the scene is still full of charm, with variety of tint and aspect, the distant snow-line meeting that of the sky, the ships, the ice, the wheeling gulls, etc. From his study- window Dr. Holmes... used to look out with an 154 OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES.
