To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
I now come to a branch of the subject where the theory of sound fails us altogether, to a class of DOUBLE REFRACTION. 91 optical phenomena which have nothing answering to them in sound. I refer to double refraction and po- larization. Of these phenomena, the former of which is so closely related to the latter, double refraction was the first to be discovered. It was in 1669 that Bartho- linus published his account of the discovery of a strange and unusual refraction in Iceland spar. The subject... was taken up and investigated with the keen- est interest by Huygens, whom we must regard as the founder of the theory of undulations. It would not be in accordance with the object which I have had in view in these lectures to enter into details respecting the phenomenon, and I must content myself with mentioning a few of the more salient features. Iceland spar stands we may say alone among minerals in at the same time possessing powerful double refraction and occurring in large clear crys- talline masses.
