Moreover so rigid was the etiquette of the establishment that we were not permitted to whistle inside the house, for the Tibetans believe that to do so invites disaster.
This mountain village could not have mustered fifty people all told, and the men were chiefly hunters, woodsmen and herdsmen ? the people are too indolent, too tolerant of a hand-to-mouth existence, to cultivate more than the barest amount that would suffice, and the women were responsible for most of that ; but excellent fresh milk could be bought here, a luxury unknown in China.
