To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Passing over the emblematical part of the procession, which never seems to vary, we come to the immense coflBm, supported on a centre pole made in the likeness of a dragon and borne on the shoulders of twenty-eight men. Clustered round it are the chief mourners, thirty or forty in number, dressed from head to foot in white, the leading gentleman bowed almost double as though with grief, and supported in this singularly uncomfortable and not very dignified position by a man on either side. The e...ntire cortege is roped in by a string of men marching on either side and holding up a long white sash, which forms a sort of rail round the coffin and its attendant mutes. Somehow the unreality of it all strikes one as farcical; everyone is so obviously insincere, so preoccupied with quite other matters, that it is scarcely flippant to add that the mourners looked more like a contingent of dissolute pastry-cooks than anything else. Next comes the brass band playing bank-holiday airs with a triumphant blare of trumpets and roll of drums, but the attempts of the soldiers behind to carry themselves with erect military bearing and to keep in step, would have moved a drill-sergeant to tears.
