It is a little remarkable, that those who have so uniformly inculcated the sentiment that '' ignorance is the mother of de- votion," should feel such an interest in this great subject as to leave their own countries, where that which they consider the only true faith pre- vails, and is preserved to a great extent by the practical influence of the maxim above-men- tioned, and should visit a people where the in* dispensable importance of universal education 97 ia -aGknowledged by all, aod very generaHy practised ; and this for the mere purpose of en- gaging in literary instruction.
