What reading level is Orchestration book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
An absurd and spurious piece of archaism. The ordinary Db military Flutes and Piccolos are, of course, written for in the key of a semitone below the pitch of the piece, and, as the usual keys for military music vary from Bb to Db, it will be seen that this gives the Flutes a range of four easy keys. A, D, G, and C. In many cases the difierence of a semitone in pitch exactly corrects the transposition which is necessary in an arrangement for military band. Example, — the Andante in the Overture... to Kossini's Williavi Tell. The brilliant Flute Obbligato to the English Horn solo appears in the original Score in G major. On transposition for military band the key of the piece is Ab major. The flute in Db remains in its original key. • See Example 7. 204 ORCHESTRATION No. 33. The Oboe^ (or Hautboy). Fr. Hauthois ; It. Ohoe ; Ger. Oboe. This is a double-reed instrument of considerable antiquity. Its forefather was the Schalmey, a treble reed-instrument which, with its larger brothers the Pommer and Bombard, formed the principal reed- group in the mediaeval Wind-Band.
