The great distances to the Canadian Atlantic ports, the poor faciUties provided by them for handling grain in the early days of the trade, and the smaller and less varied trade at those ports than at those of the United States aU com- bined to divert the export trade to American ports ; and it is only comparatively recently that attempts to keep the trade altogether in Canadian territory 3 have met with a measure of success.
