His con- duct as a man, a humanitai'ian and a statesman, both before and after his election as President, was such as to command the respect, sympathy and support of his owai country and the world at large. He became a martyr to the cause to which he devoted his life, and his memory will ever live in the minds of the people as an example of the highest and truest devotion to a political principle which any party ever yet recognized in its chief.
