Gerot or Gerald, Earl of Desmond^ to Sir William Cecily recommending his Chaplain, " Sir Edmonde Hiffiman/^ to be Archbishop of CasheL February 18, 1561-2 [Orig.] The Archbishoprick... of Cashel, void by the decease of Roland Baron or Fitz-Gerald, on the 28th of October, 1661, was not filled till &e year 1567, when James Mac-Caghwell was promoted to that see : The Chancellorship of Cashel, at this period held by Edmund Hijffiman, was, on the 21st of June following the date of this letter, conferred on John Archdeacon. — lAber Hibernim^ pars v. p. 100.
I comend me veray harttillie unto yo' wo'shipfuU M'ship, having sent my veray loving chaplane & frende S' Edmonde Hiffirnaii chauncello' of Casshall, (of whom passing goode opinion is conceaved emongs us of civilitie & goode man^s) to be suito' to the Quenes Ma*^® for tharchbusshoprick of Casshell now woide, & have written to my frendes in his fauo's, of whom I recken yo^, (allthough I be not yet acquainted w*^ yo' M'ship,) as any oth% thies shalbe therfore moste harttilly to beseache yo^ to showe yo'^self my goode frende^ in presenting my said chapleners Ires^ & mowing his p'pose to hir moste excellent Ma**® & the co^saill^ wherby I doubte L Digitized by Google 110 ORIGINAL.
