In her right hand shone an arrow of gold ; and in her left a sparkling shell, the sign of Morven's peace. " Besides which, ten other "shells studded with gems" are offered — "the blue water trembles on their stars, and seems to be sparkling wine. They gladdened once the kings of the world, in the midst of their echoing halls. " These seem to be the only instances, so far as we can observe, in which gold is distinctly specified as an article of ornament in use — and in both cases, it is clearly ...traceable as an importation from " the land of the strangers. " These strangers, as we have elsewhere shown, were the Britons inhabiting Scotland south of the Clyde, under Roman rule in Ossian's day ; but among whom the Phoenicians also, at an earlier date, had been traders, and had in all probability left specimens of the precious metal behind them. Certain it is, that graceful ornaments for the head, neck, and wrists, called torques — made of the finest gold, and in the form of double twisted wires tapering to a clasp at the extremi- ties, supposed to have been worn exclusively by chiefs and men of distinction — have been found not unfrequently, both in the Island of Arran and in the North of Ireland, the very scenes of rendezvous and of campaigns by the people of Fingalo Ornaments of smaller size, but of much greater weight in proportion -, also of the finest gold, and same sort of pattern, but closed at the extremities — without clasp or solder — so as to form a complete serpent-ring ; have likewise been found — two of them together, so late as 1869, in one of the Hebrides not far distant from Arran.
