The system of slavery thus started in Virginia soon spread to the other colonies. In the south, the slaves were used in agriculture and they rapidly increased in numbers. The Government of Virginia. — Up to i6ig the colonists had Httle or nothing to say about their own government. They were obhged to obey the governors who were sent over from England by ...the London Company. Often these governors were severe and unjust. They did all they could to increase the profits of the Company which had sent them over, and they did not care much whether the colonists liked their actions or not. In 1619, the people of Virginia (there were about 4000 of them at that time) appealed to the London Company to allow them to have a voice in their government. The Company agreed to their demands. Governor Yeardley was sent over and he at once ordered each borough or plantation to elect two representatives.
